Nature morte au pot bleu is a still life painted by André Derain in 1904, with a blue pot as its central subject, as the title tells us. Still life was a subject Derain returned to, and this work belongs to that part of his output. It dates from the years just before his paintings of 1905 and 1906, when he and Henri Matisse became known for the bold, saturated colour of Fauvism. Seen in that light, it offers a chance to look at an artist on the verge of a significant moment in his career. The painting is now in a private collection.
On your wall: The blue pot and the still-life subject suit a study, dining room or quiet corner of a living room, where a modern, colour-led picture can sit comfortably.

André Derain was a French painter and sculptor who co-founded Fauvism alongside Henri Matisse. His work from 1905 to 1906 is known for its bold, exuberant colour. By 1910 his style had grown more restrained, shaped by his study of Cézanne and the old masters. After the First World War he became a leading figure in the Return to order.
