This photograph brings together a whole court in a single image. At the top of a pyramid sit the emperor, his wife and their son, and beneath them are statesmen, soldiers, artists, writers and others connected with the imperial household. Disdéri made it by photographing hundreds of individual figures, cutting each one away from its background and mounting the likenesses together on one sheet. He then photographed that collage and printed the result on small cards measuring 6 x 9 cm. Cards of this kind worked like visual catalogues, presenting the leading names of a profession or social group at a glance. It is an albumen print from France, dated to around 1866.
On your wall: Its fine detail and black and white tones suit a study, library, hallway or any room where a closer look is rewarded, especially alongside traditional or historic furnishings.
