About this artwork

This is Eugène Atget's view of Rue du Prévôt, in Paris's 4th arrondissement. The photograph shows a narrow street paved with cobbles, its walls covered in posters, with a lamp fixed to one wall. It is an albumen print, a process that gives the image its warm sepia tone. Atget set out to record the streets and architecture of Paris before modernisation changed them, and this quiet, close view of an ordinary street belongs to that lifelong project. The print is held in the collection of the Musée Carnavalet.

On your wall: Its sepia tones and quiet street scene suit a study, hallway or sitting room, especially alongside other black and white photography or traditional furnishings.

About Eugène Atget

Eugène Atget was a French photographer and self-styled flâneur who set out to record the architecture and street scenes of Paris before modernisation swept them away. He sold his pictures to artists and craftspeople, and later inspired the surrealists. Berenice Abbott first published most of his photographs after his death, when his reputation began to grow.
