About this artwork

In 1851 Gustave Le Gray travelled through southwestern France with his friend, the photographer Auguste Mestral, documenting historic sites for the Commission of Historic French Monuments, particularly those needing or undergoing restoration. This photograph was taken from the left bank of the Tech River, below the old town of Palalda, about four miles from the Spanish border. Rather than moving in for a close study of the ancient bridge, which was not among his assigned sites, Le Gray gave greater weight to the rugged landscape around it. It is a salted paper print made from a waxed-paper negative.

On your wall: Its soft monochrome tones and landscape subject suit studies, living rooms, hallways and reading corners, especially where a calm, traditional or understated atmosphere is wanted.

About Gustave Le Gray

Gustave Le Gray was a French artist who worked as a painter, draughtsman, sculptor and print-maker, and above all as a photographer. He is often described as the most important French photographer of the nineteenth century, thanks to his technical innovations, his teaching of other notable photographers, and his remarkable imagination. He also helped develop the wax paper negative.
