About this artwork

Bonington travelled to Venice in 1826, two years after his success at the Paris Salon. The city had long drawn landscape painters, though constant rain at first left him low in spirits. When the weather turned, Venice appeared at its most glorious. He often painted outdoors to catch fleeting impressions of architecture and light, and made this oil study on millboard from a boat anchored in the lagoon near the Doge's Palace. Thick swirls of paint, with colours blended while still wet, show how quickly he worked.

On your wall: Its lively brushwork and view of Venice suit a study, living room or hallway, particularly for anyone who enjoys travel-inspired landscapes and waterside scenes.

About Richard Parkes Bonington

Richard Parkes Bonington was an English Romantic painter whose family moved to France when he was fourteen, so he is often thought of as French as well. He brought elements of English style to French art. His coastal landscapes, with low horizons, wide skies and beautifully handled light, are especially admired.
