Édouard Baldus chose to photograph Notre-Dame from the side, an angle that lets us take in the full volume of the building. From here we can see two workshops set up for the cathedral's restoration, along with piles of construction materials and scaffolding rising against three of its flying buttresses. These are the arched supports that brace the walls. The image is a salted paper print made from a wet collodion negative, produced in France in 1852–53. Baldus, a French photographer of landscape, architecture and railways, brings a careful eye to the structure and to the work going on around it.
On your wall: Its monochrome tones and architectural subject suit a study, library, hallway or living room, particularly where traditional furnishings or a quiet, considered scheme set the mood.

Édouard Baldus was a French photographer who turned his camera to three main subjects: landscapes, architecture and the railways. His work brings together the built and natural worlds, giving buildings, scenery and railway lines the same careful attention. For anyone drawn to early photography or to the character of France's landscapes and structures, his pictures offer a thoughtful place to start.
