Adolphe Braun made this carbon print around 1867, showing an array of game birds, the kind prized for their flavour and for the challenge they offered the hunter. His prints were extraordinarily large, and he intended them as affordable alternatives for middle-class buyers who could not own the painted hunt scenes that hung in the country houses of Europe's upper classes. Such subjects, taken up by photographers and even some Impressionist painters in the 19th century, recalled a leisurely rural pastime that was growing rare in an increasingly urban, industrialised France.
On your wall: Its black and white tones and traditional still-life subject suit a dining room, a study or a hallway, especially in a home that favours a classic, calm look.

Adolphe Braun was a French photographer whose work ranged across several subjects. He is best known for his floral still lifes, his scenes of Parisian streets and his grand Alpine landscapes. Together, these show a photographer equally at home with delicate arrangements of flowers, the life of the city and the scale of the mountains.
