Alfred Stieglitz took this photograph in 1907. It shows passengers on the steerage decks of the SS Kaiser Wilhelm II, with men, women and children on the lower deck and a young man in a round straw hat looking down from the deck above. Stieglitz described how the shapes caught his attention: the leaning funnel, the stairway tilting the other way, the white gangway with its chain railing, white braces crossing a man's back, and a mast cutting a triangle into the sky. He saw these forms relating to one another and linked them to his feeling about life. Some critics have hailed it as one of the greatest photographs of all time, both a document of its era and an early work of modernism.
On your wall: Its black and white tones and human subject suit a study, hallway, living room or office, especially in a considered, modern setting.

Alfred Stieglitz was an American photographer who, across a career of some fifty years, did much to establish photography as an accepted art form. He also ran galleries in New York in the early twentieth century, where many avant-garde European artists were shown to American audiences. He was married to the painter Georgia O'Keeffe.
