An elderly man and woman rest beneath a great pine, while two small figures peek out from behind its trunk. A quiet, gently humorous scene.

This hanging-scroll painting by Ogata Kōrin shows an elderly man and woman seated on the ground beneath a large pine tree. Around them lie everyday tools: rakes, a broom and a basket. Look closely at the trunk and you will find two small figures peeking out from behind it, which adds a touch of liveliness to the scene. Kōrin worked in the Rinpa School tradition, and the painting is dated 1687. It is part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its calm subject and the tree at its centre suit a quiet study, a bedroom or a reading corner, especially in a setting that favours Japanese art.
