About this artwork

This is one of five surimono, prints privately commissioned rather than made for general sale, which together form a single image of people collecting sea life at low tide. Ten witty poems by members of an Edo poetry circle appear in the upper part of the composition, two on each print. The group was led by Hisakataya Misora, who wrote four of them. The work is a colour woodblock print from a pentaptych, made around 1830 in Japan's Edo period. It may have been printed in April, thought the best time of year for beachcombing.

On your wall: Its seaside subject and the poems across the top suit a calm hallway, study or living room, especially where Japanese art or a light, quiet scheme is already at home.
