This is a fan painting by Ogata Kōrin, dated 1702, and its subject is plum blossoms, as the title tells us. It was made in ink and colour on gold paper, so the flowers sit against a shimmering golden surface. Kōrin belonged to the Rinpa school, and he worked as a painter, lacquerer and textile designer as well as a landscape illustrator. The work is now held in the Honolulu Museum of Art.
On your wall: The gold ground and the delicate blossom subject would suit a calm living room, a quiet hallway or a bedroom where a touch of warm light is welcome.
