About this artwork

This colour woodblock print comes from Edo-period Japan and is by Keisai Eisen, an ukiyo-e artist who specialised in bijin-ga, pictures of beautiful women. The title tells us what to look for: a woman with papers held in her mouth and a fan in her hand, as though she has paused mid-task. Woodblock prints of this kind are built from carved blocks inked in colour, which gives the image its clear outlines and flat, considered areas of tone. The work is now part of the Cleveland Museum of Art's Japanese art collection.

On your wall: Its subject and Japanese woodblock character suit a calm study, bedroom, hallway or living room where a single figure can be appreciated up close.
