About this artwork

Itō Jakuchū painted this work, titled Water plant, and it is now in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. As the title suggests, the subject is a plant that grows in water, a modest theme of the kind that suited a painter drawn to traditional Japanese subjects. Jakuchū worked in the mid-Edo period, when Japan was closed off from the outside world. His work often combines familiar themes with a willingness to experiment, particularly in how he handles perspective.

On your wall: A natural, understated subject that would sit well in a study, a calm bedroom, or a living space where you want something thoughtful and unhurried on the wall.

About Itō Jakuchū

Itō Jakuchū was a Japanese painter who worked in the mid-Edo period, when Japan had closed itself off from the outside world. Many of his paintings take traditional Japanese subjects, chickens and other birds above all. Though rooted in tradition, much of his work experiments boldly with perspective and shows strikingly modern stylistic touches.
