About this artwork

Tarbell painted this scene in 1901 in oil on canvas. It shows his wife, Emeline, walking through the landscape on Bos'n's Hill in New Castle, New Hampshire, shielded from the sun by a parasol, with a much-loved dog at her side. The hill was a favourite place for leisure outings for the Tarbell family, which included four children. Light fills the setting, giving the picture its gentle, summery feeling. Four years after this work, the couple bought a summer house nearby.

On your wall: Its sunny outdoor subject suits living rooms, hallways and bedrooms where you want a calm, airy touch of summer landscape.
