Storm is an oil painting on canvas by Ivan Aivazovsky, dated 1851. It belongs to the tradition of marine art, the genre for which the Russian Romantic painter is best known. Aivazovsky was born in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea and spent most of his life there, so the sea was close to him from the start. As the title suggests, the subject is a sea in turmoil, a scene of weather and water rather than quiet calm. The painting is held today in the Russian Museum.
On your wall: A sea scene of this kind suits a living room, study or hallway, where it can bring a sense of movement and drama to the wall.
