Northeaster is an oil painting on canvas by Winslow Homer, one of several marine subjects he painted. Like The Fog Warning and Breezing Up, it was made during his time in Maine. Green-blue waves crash against dark rocks beneath a grey sky, and white spray rises high above the shore. The scene sets the sea against the rocky coast, a struggle of elements that fills the whole view. Homer was best known for his marine subjects, and the painting now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
On your wall: Its cool greens, blues and greys suit a study, hallway, living room or coastal-themed space where a dramatic seascape can bring movement to the wall.

Winslow Homer was an American painter and illustrator, working mainly with landscape subjects and best known for his scenes of the sea. He is regarded as one of the leading painters of nineteenth-century America, and as an important figure in American art more broadly.
