About this artwork

Ferdinand Hodler painted this work in 1908 in oil on canvas. As the title tells us, it shows the Jungfrau, the Swiss mountain, rising above a sea of mist. Hodler was a Swiss painter, and landscape was a subject he returned to throughout his career. This painting is now in the collection of the Museum of Art and History in Geneva.

On your wall: Its mountain subject and sense of open space suit living rooms, studies and quiet hallways, particularly where you want a calm landscape to give the wall some depth.

About Ferdinand Hodler

Ferdinand Hodler was a Swiss painter, counted among the best-known Swiss artists of the nineteenth century. He began with realistic portraits, landscapes and scenes of everyday life. Later he moved towards a personal form of Symbolism, which he called "parallelism". His work shows a clear shift from close observation to a more distinctive, individual style.
