About this artwork

Painted in 1908, this landscape by Ferdinand Hodler shows the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, the three peaks of the Bernese Alps, rising above a sea of mist, as the title tells us. It is an oil painting on canvas, and it belongs to the group of mountain landscapes Hodler made in the early 1900s. Hodler is among the best-known Swiss painters of the nineteenth century. He began with realistic portraits, landscapes and genre scenes, and later developed a personal Symbolism that he called "parallelism".

On your wall: With its mountain subject and mist-filled view, it suits calm living rooms, studies and hallways where a sense of open space and quiet is welcome.
