Ivan Shishkin, 1887
Sunlight filters through a grove of old oaks, falling on a grassy clearing where a boulder and a small stream lie quietly below the branches.

Ivan Shishkin painted Oak Grove in 1887, working in oil on canvas. The picture is a sunlit landscape of several large, old oak trees standing over an open, grassy clearing. A boulder rests in the grass and a small stream runs through the scene, so the eye moves between the heavy trunks, the bright ground and the water. Shishkin was a Russian Realist best known for his landscapes, and the subject here, the oak, is treated with that same attention to the natural world. The painting is held in the Kiev National Picture Gallery.
On your wall: Its greens, earthy browns and warm light suit a living room, study or hallway where a calm woodland view would bring a little of the outdoors inside.
