About this artwork

Caillebotte painted this work in 1876, in oil on canvas. It measures 117 by 82 centimetres and is a piece of genre art, a scene of everyday modern life. The title tells us it shows a young man at his window, and the location is linked to the rue de Miromesnil. Caillebotte was a member of the Impressionist circle, yet his painting tended to be more realistic than that of many of his fellow artists. This picture now belongs to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

On your wall: Its tall, upright format and quiet city scene suit a hallway, study or living room, especially where a thoughtful, contemporary touch is wanted.

About Gustave Caillebotte

Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter and a member of the Impressionist group, though his style was more realistic than that of many of his peers. He took an early interest in photography as an art form. His family's wealth allowed him to support fellow Impressionists, and the collection of their works he bequeathed became central to the French Republic's holdings of Impressionism.
