About this artwork

Painted in oil on canvas in 1891, this work shows an annual procession held in a small Brittany village on the feast day of Saint-Jacques. Young women dressed in white walk at the front, followed by married women in black who carry a religious icon. Maurice Denis was a leading figure among the Nabis, the group whose name means "Prophets". He turned away from naturalism and materialism, hoping to bring spirituality back into art. Here that approach shows in flat, decorative shapes and colours chosen for their own effect rather than for strict realism.

On your wall: The contrast of white and black figures and its calm, decorative character suit a living room, study or hallway, especially where a quiet, considered picture is wanted.
