About this artwork

Monet painted this view of the Seine near Vétheuil in 1878, working in oil on canvas. The title places us beside the river, and the subject sits squarely within the landscape tradition Monet pursued throughout his career, in which he sought to capture nature as he perceived it. He was a founder of Impressionism, the movement that took its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874. Today this work belongs to the collection of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

On your wall: A river landscape like this suits living rooms, studies and quiet hallways, where it brings a sense of open air and calm to the space.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
