Roter Fleck, or Red Spot, is an abstract composition by Wassily Kandinsky, dated 1914. A large red spot sits at its centre, resting on a tilted white trapezoid, with a scattering of geometric forms around it. Nothing here depicts a recognisable scene, so the eye moves between colour, shape and balance instead. The work is also known as Red Spot II. Kandinsky is generally regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, and this piece shows that approach clearly.
On your wall: The strong red and crisp white make it a confident choice for a living room, studio or study, especially in modern spaces that welcome a focal point.

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist, born in Moscow. He came to painting relatively late, beginning his studies at thirty. He went on to work in Germany during the late Belle Époque and the interwar years, and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art.
