Wassily Kandinsky, 1907
A couple in bright costume ride through birch trees, a glowing town rising across the river behind them.

Two riders in colourful Russian dress sit on a dappled horse among birch trees. Behind them, across a river, a town of onion domes seems to glow. Kandinsky built the scene from small mosaic-like dabs of colour set against a dark ground, so the figures, trees and distant buildings shimmer rather than sit in sharp outline. The work is oil paint on canvas and is held at the Lenbachhaus.
On your wall: Its jewel-like colours against a dark ground suit living rooms, studies and hallways that want a focal point with warmth and depth.

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist, born in Moscow. He came to painting relatively late, beginning his studies at thirty. He went on to work in Germany during the late Belle Époque and the interwar years, and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art.
