This is a colour lithograph poster by Jules Chéret, published in Paris in 1887 and printed by Imprimerie Chaix, successor to Chéret. It advertises the 1887 season at the sea-bathing resort of Dieppe on behalf of the Chemins de fer de l'Ouest, the railway company, and belongs to the tradition of early tourism and travel advertising. The sheet is large, measuring about 124.5 by 89.5 centimetres. Chéret, a French lithographer and painter, is often called the father of the modern poster, and this work shows how he put the medium to use for seaside leisure and rail travel.
On your wall: Its seaside subject and vintage poster character suit a hallway, living room or study, and would also work well in a holiday home or a dining area.
