About this artwork

Toulouse-Lautrec made this colour lithograph in 1896 as a programme for Le Missionnaire, produced for the Théâtre Libre. It looks at the theatre from the audience's side, showing two spectators in a box decorated with a gilded mascaron, the sculpted face that gives the print its title. Lautrec was immersed in the colourful, theatrical life of Belle Époque Paris, and the print reflects that world. It is a piece of printed theatre ephemera, made to be held and read, and it rewards a close look at how the figures and the ornamental box are arranged.

On your wall: Its theatrical subject and period feel suit a study, a sitting room or a hallway, especially alongside other retro and vintage posters.

About Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist and illustrator. He worked in Paris during the Belle Époque, the late nineteenth century, and threw himself into the city's colourful, theatrical life. That immersion shaped his popular artworks, which drew their subjects from the lively and often decadent world around him.
