This is Louis Rhead's poster for the Salon des Cent, dated 1897. It belongs to the tradition of advertising posters, where image and lettering work together to catch the eye of passers-by. Rhead was born in Etruria, Staffordshire, and worked as an artist, illustrator and author. He later made his life in the United States, having emigrated at twenty-four. This poster sits comfortably among vintage graphic work and suits anyone who likes the look of late nineteenth-century poster art.
