Louis Rhead made this advertising poster in 1890 for The Quartier Latin, a magazine devoted to the arts. At its centre sits a woman holding a palette and paint brushes, a fitting emblem for a publication about art and artists. Rhead was born in Etruria, Staffordshire, and moved to the United States at twenty-four, working as an illustrator and author. The poster belongs to the tradition of promotional graphics from the period, where a single figure and a clear message carried the whole idea.
On your wall: Well suited to a studio, study or creative workspace, and equally at home in a hallway or sitting room that welcomes a vintage, art-minded touch.
