Louis Rhead designed this poster in 1895 to advertise Packer's Tar Soap. It is a lithograph, and a copy is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The design belongs to the Art Nouveau style, which shows in its decorative lettering, with the letters of the word TAR woven into the composition. A woman is the central figure, and conifer motifs nod to the pine tar in the product's name. Rhead was an English-born American illustrator who emigrated to the United States in his twenties, and this poster shows his work for the American market in the 1890s.
