Leopoldo Metlicovitz, an Italian painter, illustrator and poster designer, created this poster in 1899 for Distillerie Italiane. A woman wrapped in red drapery stands beside a lamp that glows brightly, set above an alcohol-gas stove. The lettering promotes the company's alcohol-gas appliances and mentions Milan. The flowing lines and decorative figure are typical of Art Nouveau, and the whole design is arranged to draw the eye to the light at its centre.
On your wall: Its warm red tones and period charm suit a kitchen, dining room or study, especially in a home with a vintage or retro character.

Leopoldo Metlicovitz was an Italian painter, illustrator and poster designer. He worked across these three fields, moving between fine art and the printed image. Posters were a central part of his practice, and his work is a good fit for anyone who appreciates graphic design with a painterly sensibility.
