About this artwork
Julius Klinger designed this poster in 1908 to advertise the Flugplatz Berlin-Johannisthal, an airfield in Berlin. The version we know is a two-colour lithograph dating from 1924, so the design was printed again some years after it first appeared. Its subject is early aviation, and it includes people looking upwards, which draws us into the same sense of anticipation. Klinger was an Austrian illustrator, commercial graphic artist and typographer, and his training in Vienna sits comfortably behind a poster where image and lettering work together with a restrained palette.
On your wall: Its limited two-colour palette and aviation theme suit a study, hallway or living room, particularly where vintage graphics or travel and transport prints are already collected.
