About this artwork

Abraham van Beyeren's still life gathers a silver wine jug, ham and fruit in the opulent manner he was known for. The painting is large, and the brushwork is loose and energetic. The jug is built from rough strokes that look almost abstract up close. Step back, and it settles into a convincing object, shining with intricate reflections. Among them is a ghostly self-portrait of the artist at his easel. Works like this were meant to be viewed from a little distance, perhaps hung above a mantelpiece. It is oil on canvas, made in the Netherlands in the 1660s.

On your wall: Its generous scale and rich subject suit a dining room, or a spot above a mantelpiece, where it can be enjoyed from a little distance.

About Abraham van Beyeren

Abraham Hendriksz van Beijeren, also spelled Van Beyeren, was a Dutch painter and draughtsman. He received little recognition during his own lifetime, yet he is now regarded as one of the most important painters of pronkstilleven, the opulent, richly staged style of still life. His work continues to be admired for it.
