About this artwork

Renoir painted The Grands Boulevards in 1875, in oil on canvas. It is a cityscape showing a busy boulevard in Paris, and it reflects the effects of industrialisation and Haussmannisation on the city. The painting is now housed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where it is regarded as Renoir's best-known view of Paris. It belongs to the Impressionist movement, which took modern urban life as a subject worth painting.

On your wall: It suits living rooms, studies and hallways where a lively city scene can bring a sense of movement and an air of Parisian street life.

About Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a leading French Impressionist. He is especially known for his depictions of feminine beauty, which have led some to see him as the last representative of a tradition running from Rubens to Watteau. His work carries that long lineage of European painting into the Impressionist movement.
