About this artwork

This small oil painting on wood is a tronie, a Dutch word for a head or facial expression. Works of this kind were not meant as portraits of a particular person. They let painters study how a face looks and how fanciful costume can be shown. Around 1630, Rembrandt often used the format to try out different lighting and expressions. Here, a strong contrast of light and shade models the young man's face, while the striped scarf and the pendant on its jewelled chain add an exotic touch. The panel carries Rembrandt's monogram, though some scholars have suggested it may be by Isaac de Joudreville, a pupil and associate who painted similar tronies in a smooth, elegant style.

On your wall: A single face with dramatic light and shade suits a study, hallway or reading corner, where it can be seen up close and enjoyed quietly.
