About this artwork

In 1888 Monet spent four months in Antibes, on the Mediterranean coast of southeastern France, looking for inspiration. Strong winds sometimes threatened to topple his easel, yet he completed nearly 40 works there. This oil painting shows a gardener's house with the sea and the distant Alps behind it. Monet captures the intensity of midday light with thick paint in bright colours, which brings to mind the region's sunny climate. Small daubs of green on the slender trees around the house hint that spring is beginning.

On your wall: Its bright colours and sunlit coastal scene suit living rooms, dining areas, hallways and light-filled spaces where a touch of Mediterranean warmth is welcome.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
