Kazimir Malevich, end of 1920s
Apple trees in full blossom fill a sunlit garden, with a yellow house, green roof and blue fence glimpsed among the branches.

Malevich painted this spring garden at the end of the 1920s, returning to a motif he had first taken up in 1905–06. It is an oil painting on canvas in an impressionistic manner, quite unlike the abstract work he is best known for. Blossoming apple trees fill the scene, set in a bright garden. A yellow house with a green roof and a blue fence sit among them, and the colours are laid down in soft, light touches. The painting is now in the Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg.
On your wall: Its fresh greens, yellows and blues suit bright living rooms, hallways and kitchens, and bring a calm, seasonal note to a simple, uncluttered space.

Kazimir Malevich was a Russian avant-garde artist and art theorist. Through both his paintings and his writings, he helped shape the course of abstract painting in the twentieth century. He is best remembered as the founder of Suprematism, a radically non-objective approach to painting that he introduced in 1915.
