Kazimir Malevich, 1920
A large black cross set over red on a white ground. Malevich keeps the composition to a few shapes and lets them speak.

Painted in 1920, this work by Kazimir Malevich is made in oil on canvas. Its full title describes it plainly: a large cross in black over red, on white. Malevich is best known as the founder of Suprematism, the non-objective approach to painting he introduced in 1915, and this piece belongs to his work from that period. The picture is built from just three colours and a handful of simple forms, so the eye settles on the balance between them. It is now in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
On your wall: Its black, red and white palette and spare geometry suit modern living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where plain walls give the cross room to stand out.

Kazimir Malevich was a Russian avant-garde artist and art theorist. Through both his paintings and his writings, he helped shape the course of abstract painting in the twentieth century. He is best remembered as the founder of Suprematism, a radically non-objective approach to painting that he introduced in 1915.
