Piet Mondrian, 1902
A windmill on the Gein, seen in a close, cropped view. Piet Mondrian painted it in 1902, long before his geometric abstractions.

This 1902 landscape shows the Broekzijder mill beside the Gein, with its sails turned to face west. Piet Mondrian chose a truncated view, so the mill is cropped by the edges of the picture rather than set neatly in the frame. It is painted in oil on canvas laid over cardboard. Mondrian later moved from figurative painting towards an increasingly abstract style, and this early work shows him still rooted in the observed landscape. It is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
On your wall: A quiet rural landscape that suits a study, a hallway or a calm living room, especially where a restrained, minimalist scheme is wanted.

Piet Mondrian was a Dutch painter and art theorist, born Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan and using the shortened name from 1911. He is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Beginning with figurative painting, he moved step by step towards abstraction, until his work was reduced to simple geometric elements.
