About this artwork

In 1864 Eugène Boudin painted this beach scene at Deauville, one of the Normandy resorts he returned to often during the 1860s. Well-to-do visitors sit and stand in relaxed, informal groups, giving the picture a feeling of ease and intimacy. In the foreground, a chair lies on its side, as though the wind or its owner's sudden departure had tipped it over. Boudin painted it in oil on a small wood panel. He laid down a thin white ground and appears to have started painting straight away, without drawing guidelines first. That directness gives the work its fresh, airy quality, well suited to a windy day by the sea.

On your wall: Its light, breezy seaside subject suits living rooms, hallways and bedrooms, and sits comfortably in calm, airy spaces or alongside coastal and traditional decor.

About Eugène Boudin

Eugène Boudin was a French painter and one of the first landscape artists in France to work outdoors. He is best known for his marine scenes, capturing boats and everything that belongs to the sea and its shores. Baudelaire praised his pastels for their economy, and Corot called him the "King of the skies".
