About this artwork

Painted in 1864, this portrait of Romaine Lacaux may be the earliest canvas Renoir signed. The Lacaux family commissioned it while on holiday, and Renoir made it during a stay at the artist's colony in the village of Barbizon, near Paris. The child's white blouse and the drapery behind her glow with reflected light and colour, the result of close observation of translucent materials. The subtle shifts of tone in her face recall Renoir's earlier training as a decorator of porcelain. Together they give the picture a gentle, youthful sense of beauty.

On your wall: Its soft, light tones and tender portrait subject suit bedrooms, nurseries, quiet reading corners and calm living spaces where a gentle presence is welcome.

About Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a leading French Impressionist. He is especially known for his depictions of feminine beauty, which have led some to see him as the last representative of a tradition running from Rubens to Watteau. His work carries that long lineage of European painting into the Impressionist movement.
