Peter Charles Henderson, 1804
A blue water lily floats among its pads, with palm trees and a mosque rising behind it. It is a calm, unusual botanical scene.

This colour-printed botanical plate shows a blue water lily with its broad lily pads in the foreground. Behind the flower stand a mosque and palm trees, which places the plant in an Egyptian setting, as the title says. It was published in London on 11 September 1804 by Dr. Thornton. Peter Charles Henderson is credited as the artist, and the plate belongs to the tradition of illustrated botanical prints, where a single plant is shown with care and given a scene around it.
On your wall: The cool blue and soft greens suit calm spaces such as bedrooms, bathrooms, studies and quiet hallways, and sit well with natural, muted interiors.
