About this artwork

This botanical plate shows the swamp cottonwood, Populus heterophylla, through one broad heart-shaped leaf and a short twig with a bud. It is hand-coloured and comes from The North American Sylva, where it appears as Plate 97. The caption beneath the image names it as Cotton Tree, using an older botanical name, Populus argentea. The plate is signed by Bessa as the artist who drew it and by Gabriel as the engraver. Bessa was a French natural history artist known for his botanical illustrations, and the plate reflects that precise, observant approach to a single plant.

On your wall: Suits studies, hallways, kitchens and calm living spaces, especially where botanical prints or natural, muted greens and earthy tones are already part of the scheme.
