This plate from Basilius Besler's Hortus Eystettensis of 1613 is a hand-coloured engraving. It shows Colocasia, or taro, with its large leaves and its corm, flanked by two gourds. Their labels read Pseudocolocynthis and Cucurbita. Besler was a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, and the Hortus Eystettensis is the monumental florilegium for which he is best known. Here the plants are set out clearly, so the shape of the leaves and the form of the fruits can be studied closely.
On your wall: Its botanical subject suits a kitchen, dining room, study or hallway, especially where natural tones and traditional or modern interiors meet.
