This is Plate 150 from The Birds of America, John James Audubon's large-format series of bird illustrations, engraved in Scotland and England and published between 1827 and 1838. It shows a red-eyed vireo perched on a branch among leaves and catkins, with a spider on its web close by. The plate is a hand-coloured engraving, and the full sheet is shown with generous blank margins around the image. The project grew from Audubon's wish to make a complete pictorial record of North American birds.
On your wall: Its natural subject and quiet, leafy detail suit studies, hallways, bedrooms and living rooms, especially in schemes that favour botanical or traditional natural-history prints.
