Two women gather flowers on a terrace, while gold vessels and a restless bedchamber hint at a lover's awaited arrival.

Two women stand on a terrace, gathering flowers into a white bowl from a plant in a golden pot. One has a dark complexion, the other is fair-skinned. Inside the chamber, two large yellow bolsters sit at an angle on the bed, suggesting restlessness. A gold box for betel (paan), used to freshen the breath, rests there too. Golden wine vessels stand in the two turrets and on the roof, probably meant to be drunk while watching for a lover to arrive. Made in Malwa, Central India, around 1650, in gum tempera and gold on paper, it carries the title Gunakali Ragini.
On your wall: Its golden details, yellow bolsters and flower gathering suit living rooms, bedrooms and quiet reading corners, especially where a warm, floral note is wanted.
