Painted in oil on canvas in 1886, this work combines portrait and still life. Gauguin shows his friend Charles Laval in profile, set among everyday objects: fruit, a table, a napkin and a crock. The crock is a ceramic pot Gauguin made himself, so the painting also reflects his work beyond painting. The work is associated with cloisonnism and the Pont-Aven School, and it is now in the Indianapolis Museum of Art in Indiana.
On your wall: Its mix of portrait and tabletop objects suits a dining room, kitchen, study or hallway where a quiet, personal scene is welcome.

Paul Gauguin was a French painter who also worked as a sculptor, printmaker, ceramist and writer. His art is linked with Post-Impressionism and Symbolism, and he was an influential maker of woodcuts and wood engravings. Only moderately successful in his lifetime, he is now valued for his experimental use of colour and his Synthetist style, which set him apart from Impressionism.
