Paul Gauguin painted this countryside view near Arles in 1888, working in oil on canvas. It shows a rural scene in Provence, with a mas, the traditional Provençal farmhouse, cypress trees, a haystack, grass and herbs, all beneath an open sky. The subject is humble and everyday, a corner of working farmland rather than a grand vista. The painting is now in the Indianapolis Museum of Art in Indianapolis, Indiana.
On your wall: Its countryside subject suits a living room, dining area or hallway, and sits comfortably in a study or bedroom where a calm, natural scene is welcome.

Paul Gauguin was a French painter who also worked as a sculptor, printmaker, ceramist and writer. His art is linked with Post-Impressionism and Symbolism, and he was an influential maker of woodcuts and wood engravings. Only moderately successful in his lifetime, he is now valued for his experimental use of colour and his Synthetist style, which set him apart from Impressionism.
