Arkhip Kuindzhi, a Russian landscape painter, completed this work in 1900. As the title tells us, it shows the sun going down over open steppe, with the sea close by. It is a quiet subject, built around the meeting of land, water and sky at the end of the day. The painting belongs to the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg, and it has been shown there among other works by Kuindzhi in an exhibition titled “Illusion of Light”, a name that suits an artist so drawn to the effects of light.
On your wall: Its theme of sunset, open land and sea suits calm living rooms, studies and bedrooms, especially where a landscape can bring a sense of space and quiet.
