About this artwork

This print shows carnations and belongs to The Temple of Flora, the series of botanical images associated with Robert John Thornton. Thornton (1768–1837) was an English physician and botanical writer. He is known for A New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus Von Linnæus, published between 1797 and 1807, and for The British Flora of 1812. Here, the carnation is the subject, so the eye can settle on the flowers themselves.

On your wall: Carnations suit a calm spot such as a hallway, dining room, bedroom or study, where a botanical picture adds a quiet touch of nature.
