This plate from Basilius Besler's Hortus Eystettensis shows two plants side by side: a castor oil plant, named Ricinus maior, and a club moss, labelled Muscus clavatus procubens. It is an engraving that has been coloured by hand, and each plant carries its Latin name. The image comes from the special hand-coloured edition of the book, held in the seminary library in Eichstätt. Besler was a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, and the Hortus Eystettensis is the monumental florilegium for which he is best known.
On your wall: Its botanical subject and careful hand colouring suit studies, libraries, hallways and calm living spaces where a considered, natural touch is welcome.
